Minority Report: The Film

After reading Minority Report by Philipp K. Dick, we decided to watch the film released in 2002, starring Tom Cruise. As soon as the movie starts, it’s quite clear that the story and movie barely have similarities. However, the movie follows a general plot that Wtiwar is trying to take John Anderton’s, the main character, job. As of half way through the movie,  Anderton is convinced Witwar set him up using the pre crime system to claim he will murder someone.

While watching the movie , the class took note of all the differences seen so far as we’ve watched half of the movie already. One scene in the movie that evoked emotion was when Witwar was antagonizing Anderton and basically targeting him in order to destroy the pre crime system. In this scene, Witwar says to Anderton “There’s a flaw, it’s human…. It always is…John”. At this moment, Witwar is attempting to evoke emotion from the audience to feel sorry for Anderton. This is because Witwar make Anderton feel like a failure and a flaw in the system. This type of emotion was successful because the director decided to include slight pauses

throughout the sentence. This for sure added to the drama and suspense of the moment. Along with that, this provoked emotion due to the diction and how Witwar stated John was the flaw he was referring to. Instead of simply stating that the flaw within the pre crime system was human, Witwar specifically targets Anderton after building some suspense. This moment also shows the great intensity between the two characters, foreshadowing a future conflicting relationship. Overall, this scene made me feel sorry for Anderton as his job was seriously at risk and it was clear that he was being targeted by Witwar. I definitely can’t wait to finish the movie and really see the differences between the book and film.
