1984: Part 2 Left Me Shook

As my English class continues to delve into 1984 by George Orwell, part 2 of the novel seemed to strike a chord due to its unexpected ending. Although the plot took quite of a turn right as part 2 was concluding, this definitely sparked an overall positive reaction. What I really mean is that it sparked an extremely shocked reaction. Winston and Julia finally conclude reading Goldstein’s book and are up to speed on the Brotherhood and what they represent. All of sudden, they are completely ambushed by the Thought Police, something you would never expect, especially in their humble abode supposedly away from telescreens. Not only was I left confused and dumbfounded, but also blind sighted by the fact that Mr. Charrington was a member of the Thought Police! Just one event after another left me wondering what would happen next. Even though these turn of events were unforeseen, part 2 needed this type of action to keep the story alive, adding thickness to the plot.

Part 2 focused mainly on Winston and Julia’s relationship, portraying them as two star crossed lovers. Or so we suppose. As the Thought Police stormed the room above Mr. Charrington’s shop, Winston couldn’t bear to look at Julia. This incited a negative reaction from me because Winston spends all this time with her, yet he can’t face her when their situation becomes extremely rough. Not only that, but it was the last time he saw, showing how this love story is not really a love story after all. Although this incident occurred that shows a flaw in Winston and Julia’s relationship, part 2 was successful in inciting a thrill. No doubt part 2 made me enjoy 1984 a lot more and definitely left me excited to reach the home stretch and read part 3.
